In his youth he performed locally, even tap‑dancing and singing, before making his first professional appearance in the early 1950s and touring with jazz luminaries such as Charlie Parker and Miles Davis.\n\nBy the 1960s Hill had relocated to New York and secured a place on Blue Note Records as both sideman and leader. Between 1963 and 1970 he released a string of albums that have become landmarks—Black Fire (1964) and Point of Departure (1964) among them—featuring collaborators like Joe Henderson, Eric Dolphy, Bobby Hutcherson and Tony Williams. His music was notable for its dense harmonies, unusual meters and chromatic inventiveness, poised between tradition and the avant‑garde.\n\nIn later decades Hill combined performing and teaching. He held roles including composer‑in‑residence at Colgate University in the early 1970s and associate professor at Portland State University from 1989 to 1996, where he founded a Summer Jazz Intensive. His later recordings, especially Dusk (2000) and Time Lines (2006), earned renewed praise and earned downbeat and JazzTimes album‑of‑the‑year distinctions.\n\nHis final years were marked by a revival of interest in his 1960s output and unreleased material, such as the large‑ensemble session Passing Ships, issued posthumously.
