Its founders—actress-singer Ruma Guha Thakurta, composer Salil Chowdhury and filmmaker Satyajit Ray—envisioned a secular choir that could bring powerful folk, mass and literary songs to the public. Under Ruma’s steadfast leadership, the choir would grow to include hundreds of performers and deliver more than 5,000 total shows over decades.\n\nThe choir’s musical pulse draws from Bengali traditions—Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrulgeeti, Dwijendralal Ray and Atul Prasad Sen—infused with mass song energy and leftist ideals of unity and social justice. Ruma often recalled preparing “Shwagato Mandela” overnight for Nelson Mandela’s 1990 visit to Kolkata, a testament to both their musical devotion and their responsiveness to historic moments.\n\nTheir discography is wide-ranging, with notable albums including Beje Uthlo Ki Somoyer Ghori (1976), Manusher Gaan Gai (1982), Chetonar Gaan welcoming Mandela (1988), Besh Sotoker Gaan (1990), Kadam Kadam Badaye Ja (1996), and Ek Dor Mein (2010). Each release captures a blend of mass, patriotic or devotional themes, often timed to anniversaries or celebrations—such as Netaji Subhas Bose’s centenary or the Bengali New Year.\n\nThe choir’s legacy rests in its cultural resonance. In 1974 their troupe won a first prize at the Copenhagen Youth Festival. They've performed at India’s 25th independence celebrations, greeted global luminaries, and marked Nobel laureate honors.
