Unfazed, he redesigned the instrument—expanding its range, adjusting string configurations, refining his playing technique to evoke vocal-like sustain and meend—and by the late 20th century had firmly established the santoor as a solo Hindustani classical instrument.\n\nSharma’s most celebrated recordings include the evocative “Call of the Valley” (1967), a collaboration with guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra and flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia that introduced Hindustani music to a broad audience.
