Renowned for blending folk melodies with Western classical arrangements, he composed iconic scores for films like Do Bigha Zamin, Madhumati, Chemmeen, and Anand, and founded India’s first secular choir, the Bombay Youth Choir.","Born on November 19, 1922 in rural Bengal and raised amid Assam’s tea gardens, Salil's musical education began with his father's gramophone collection of Western orchestral records. He was a self‑taught pianist and flautist by age six and deeply influenced by folk music and social struggles evident in his early compositions for IPTA, including stirring numbers like \"Becharpoti tomar bichaar\" and \"Gnaayer bodhu\". Driven by both art and activism, he supported peasant movements and became part of IPTA and the Communist Party, even going underground during the Bengal famine era.\n\nSalil made his first film score in 1949 for the Bengali film Paribortan. His breakthrough into Hindi cinema came in 1953 with Do Bigha Zamin, a project he co‑wrote and scored, launching his career on a national scale. He went on to compose for over 75 Hindi, 41 Bengali, and around 27 Malayalam films, including the celebrated Chemmeen (1964), Madhumati (1958), and Anand (1971). His compositional process typically began with understanding the scene’s mood, from which he crafted melodic themes before lyricists added words.\n\nHis music was defined by a seamless fusion of Eastern folk and classical elements with Western orchestration—strings, leitmotifs, and harmonies drawn from symphonic traditions. Salil's influence reached beyond film: he founded the Bombay Youth Choir in 1958, pioneering secular choral music in India. He also wrote and directed the film Pinjre Ke Panchhi in 1966, showcasing his storytelling talents.\n\nAcross decades, Salil remained anchored in political expression, notably contributing to the Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra during Bangladesh’s Liberation War with compositions like \"Bangla Amar Bangla\".
