By 1959, Nelson had cut his own path with the instrumental single “Teen Beat,” which reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and sold over a million copies, earning a gold disc.\n\nBuilding on that momentum, Nelson signed with Imperial Records and delivered further instrumental hits like “Let There Be Drums” which reached the U.S. Top 10 and became an early surf‐rock touchstone, alongside “Drums Are My Beat.” Beyond his own releases, he was a sought‐after session drummer, contributing to songs such as the Teddy Bears’ “To Know Him Is to Love Him,” The Hollywood Argyles’ “Alley Oop,” and Kathy Young’s “A Thousand Stars.” His rhythmic style – punchy, melodic, and drive‐led – brought the drum set into the spotlight at a time when instrumentals rarely broke into mainstream charts.\n\nNelson’s career was challenged near the end of 1963 by a motorcycle accident that resulted in the partial amputation of his right leg. Remarkably, he continued to record prolifically, releasing two to three albums per year through the 1960s, often putting his own twist on contemporary hits.
