A baritone singer, composer, lyricist, filmmaker and cultural ambassador, he wove Assamese folk, classical and global influences into songs that spoke of humanity, social justice and unity. His notable works span songs like “Manush Manusher Janya” and films such as Era Bator Sur, plus his music direction in Rudaali, earning him many of India’s highest honours.","Born on 8 September 1926 in Sadiya, Assam, Bhupen Hazarika was the eldest of ten children. He first recorded songs at Aurora Studio in Calcutta as a preteen, and by age 12 he lent his voice to the Assamese film Indramalati. He grew up immersed in traditional Assamese lullabies and folk, largely through his mother’s influence. After completing his MA and doctoral studies at Columbia University, he returned to India—his music enriched by American folk and inspired by Paul Robeson. Back home, Hazarika taught at Gauhati University and became deeply involved with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA), steering his art toward social change and cultural affirmation.\n\nHazarika’s musical style was a seamless blend of the folk tunes of Assam, classical contours and a global sensibility—rooted in humanity and protest. His resonant baritone became his signature, and his poetic lyrics often carried themes of unity, empathy, human rights and Assamese identity. He became known not just regionally but nationally—bringing Assamese folk motifs to Hindi and Bengali music, and composing for cinema across borders.\n\nOver his long career he wore many hats—composer, lyricist, singer, director, filmmaker, even politician. His directorial debut, the socially charged Era Bator Sur (1956), set the tone for art committed to the people. He composed music for many landmark films, including the National Award–winning score for Rudaali and contributions to films such as Gaja Gamini and Daman. His songbook grew to over a thousand songs across languages and genres.
