The name \nhad two meanings. First and foremost, it conjured the image of a bluebird locked in a cage. For Patterson, that image translated into being \ntrapped with the blues and mired in depression. But the name was also an homage to J.J. Cale, the Tulsa sound originator best known for \nhis song “After Midnight”.\nFittingly, Jaye Jayle’s music is best suited for those after midnight hours, when the house lights are dim, the air is thick with humidity and \ntobacco smoke, perceptions are chemically altered, and every note carries far more gravity. On his new album “Don’t Let Your Love Life Let \nYou Down” Patterson continues to mine his unique strain of the meditative blues while finally breaking the shackles of defeat and passing \ninto a realm residing between Western stoicism and mystic wonder. He is accompanied as always by Todd Cook, Corey Smith and Neal \nArgabright, and with special guests as Chris Maggio, Victoria Fisher, Patrick Shiroishi and Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. Jaye Jayle’s ‘secret’ member \nof the band, producer\u002Fmulti-instrumentalist Ben Chisholm (Chelsea Wolfe), mixed the album in a ‘plush velvet landscape way’; “He is a \ngenius to my ears. Ben’s ideas are modern and saturated with layers of sonic color. He takes the old American singer-songwriter template \nand imbue it with a kaleidoscope of sonic textures culled from a half-century’s worth of fringe music. He made sure that the songs felt \n‘devastatingly hopeful and emotionally straightforward’ on the album”.\n You can hear the echoes of Louisville in the new 8 songs. There is the tension and dynamics of Slint, the hushed songwriting of Bonnie \n‘Prince’ Billy and the repetitious minimalism of Shipping News, yet it somehow doesn’t tether to any tradition, it’s ‘just’ Evan’s cryptic spin \non American roots music. As a reaction on the ‘minimalistic’ approach of his fourth album “Prisyn” (Sargent House\u002F2020), Patterson \nreturned to the full-band approach, taking the crucial lessons he learned from working on “Prisyn”; “I’d hit the point of finding rehearsing \ncounterproductive.
