This is the record that turned ELO from cult fascination into a global force, and you can hear why within the first few tracks.

You get the irresistible sweep of “Telephone Line,” the swaggering confidence of “Livin’ Thing,” and the strutting, neon-lit “Do Ya” – all driven by Jeff Lynne’s knack for melodies that sound instantly familiar yet slightly left of center. The orchestration isn’t window dressing; it’s woven into the songwriting, giving even the punchiest rock moments a cinematic lift.

On vinyl, this album breathes differently: the string arrangements feel warmer, the stacked vocals more three-dimensional, and the rhythmic details land with more weight. For anyone who loves the intersection of classic rock craft and studio experimentation, this is essential listening.

Add this to your shelf if you’re building a serious ’70s collection, if you’ve worn out your Beatles records and want that lineage pushed into a more orchestral future, or if you simply want a front-row seat to ELO at their creative peak.","ELO’s symphonic rock masterclass—lush strings, huge hooks, and pure ’70s studio magic on wax.","2026-11-04 06:15:32",5169,null,false,"instock",true,1,"CRCHAH3834","500","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/Electric-Light-Orchestra-A-New-World-Record.jpg",[22
628990,[],[26
1727,"Brand New Vinyls","brand-new-vinyls",[],[32,37,42,47,52,57,61
5475,"Artist",[36],"Electric Light Orchestra
10609,"Genre",[41],"Rock
10626,"Mood",[46],"Nostalgia
1796,"No Of Records",[51],"1
1339,"Record Condition",[56],"M
1338,"Sleeve Condition",[56
264,"Speed",[65],"33",[],[68,80,93
164090,"electric-light-orchestra","https://calcuttarecords.com/artists/electric-light-orchestra/","Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) is a British rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970, blending orchestral pop, progressive pop and art rock with lush classical string arrangements and catchy melodies. Led by Jeff Lynne after early departures, the group scored major hits like Out of the Blue, Discovery and Time, becoming influential pioneers of symphonic rock.","Electric Light Orchestra was born in the autumn of 1970 in Birmingham when Roy Wood of The Move and Jeff Lynne of The Idle Race envisioned a group that would fuse rock’s energy with classical orchestration. Their early lineup included strings and woodwinds as central elements, yielding their first single, “10538 Overture,” which set the tone for the band’s unique sound. After Wood left in 1972, Lynne emerged as the driving creative force, writing, arranging and producing the band’s material and steering ELO toward international acclaim.

By the mid‑1970s ELO had refined their musical approach, integrating flowing melodies, elaborate string sections, and clever pop hooks. Albums like Eldorado and A New World Record showcased this sophisticated craftsmanship, and their 1977 double album Out of the Blue became their biggest commercial triumph, spawning multiple hit singles and cementing their status as orchestral rock icons.

In the early 1980s, ELO embraced a more electronic direction, particularly on Time, a sci‑fi‑tinged concept album packed with synthesizers and futuristic themes. The group adapted to shifting trends while maintaining their orchestral pop essence. Later albums like Secret Messages and Balance of Power closed their initial run by 1986, when the band disbanded amid evolving music industry pressures.

Jeff Lynne revived the ELO name in the 2000s, releasing Zoom in 2001 and later reforming as Jeff Lynne’s ELO for touring and new releases like Alone in the Universe (2015) and From Out of Nowhere (2019). The group’s legacy endures, celebrated for pioneering a striking and influential blend of rock and classical music that continues to inspire artists and delight music lovers worldwide.",11,[],[],[],[36],"https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/artist-electric-light-orchestra.webp
167607,"Electric Light Orchestra / Olivia Newton-John","electric-light-orchestra-olivia-newton-john","https://calcuttarecords.com/artists/electric-light-orchestra-olivia-newton-john/","Browse 2 items by Electric Light Orchestra / Olivia Newton-John at Calcutta Records, including vinyl records, CDs, and cassettes.","Electric Light Orchestra / Olivia Newton-John is featured in the Calcutta Records catalogue with 2 items available for purchase.
