Originally interested in the vibraphone, he\neventually showed a growing enthusiasm for the\ntrumpet. His primary stylistic influence was Clifford\nBrown, who gave the teenager a few lessons before\nhis untimely death in a car accident. Morgan joined\nthe Dizzy Gillespie big band at 18, and remained a\nmember for a year and a half, until the group was\nforced to disband in 1958. He began his recording\ncareer as a leader in 1956 for the Blue Note label. He\nwould record a total of 25 albums for the company.\nMorgan joined Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers in 1958,\nwhere he further developed his talents as a soloist\nand composer. Blakey is heard along with Morgan\nin Expoobident, presented here, which features a\nstrong hard bop quintet that also includes Eddie\nHiggins on piano, Art Davis on bass, and Clifford\nJordan on tenor saxophone. Morgan’s death was\ntragic. On the evening of February 19, 1972, he was\nshot by his girlfriend following an argument between\nsets at Slug’s, a popular New York City jazz club.
