Drawn from 1969 concerts and later issued on CD in 1989, it captures the band before stadiums and merchandising, when the music was still a wild laboratory of risk and telepathy.

The opening “Dark Star” is the cornerstone: a slow-blooming improvisation where every instrument listens harder than it plays. From there, the album moves through molten versions of “St. Stephen,” “The Eleven,” and “Turn On Your Love Light,” charting how the Dead fused rock, jazz-like interplay, and American roots into something that didn’t fit any existing category.

This CD is essential if you care about live music as an art form, not just a souvenir. The performances are raw but deeply musical, with Jerry Garcia’s guitar lines threading through Phil Lesh’s melodic bass and the dual drummers’ shifting patterns. You can hear a band inventing the idea of the jam album in real time.

Buy this if you want more than background music—this is a document you sit with, return to, and keep discovering new corners of every time the disc spins.","A sprawling 1969 live trip where the Dead stretch rock into cosmic ritual—essential for any serious live album shelf.","2026-10-06 05:55:13",2199,null,false,"instock",true,1,"CRCHAH23161","500","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/grateful-dead-live-dead-cd-0075992718127.jpg",[22
624843,[],[26
6811,"Brand New CD","brand-new-cds",[],[32,37,42,47,52,57,61
5554,"Artist",[36],"Grateful Dead
10609,"Genre",[41],"Rock
10632,"Mood",[46],"Psychedelic
1796,"No Of Records",[51],"1
1339,"Record Condition",[56],"M
1338,"Sleeve Condition",[56
264,"Speed",[65],"33",[],[68
163331,"grateful-dead","https://calcuttarecords.com/artists/grateful-dead/","Grateful Dead was an American rock band formed in 1965 in California, celebrated for their eclectic fusion of rock, blues, folk, country, psychedelia and improvisation. Their live performances and devoted “Deadheads” community made them pioneering icons of the jam‑band movement.","The Grateful Dead sprang to life in Palo Alto in 1965, born out of the ashes of Mother McCree’s Uptown Jug Champions and the Wildwood Boys. Early line‑ups included Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann and Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. Their early shows, deep in the Haight‑Ashbury psychedelic scene, quickly built a reputation as a band both of and for their era, absorbing folk, blues and rock influences. Name‑checks range from the Lovin’ Spoonful to the Beatles as early catalysts in their shift from acoustic roots to electric expansiveness.

Musically, the Grateful Dead defied genre labels. At once rooted in American folk and country through albums like "Workingman’s Dead" and "American Beauty", they also embraced long, free‑form improvisation and psychedelic exploration. Their style became what we now term “jam band”, with sprawling live performances, trading solos, and an improvisational approach that made each show its own living, breathing work of art.

Notable works include their self‑titled 1967 debut, and later classics like "In the Dark", which brought their only Top‑40 hit, "Touch of Grey". Despite modest chart success, their remarkable touring ethic—more than 2,300 concerts—and fan‑friendly approach, including permitting taping, built an enduring cultural legacy. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and their 1977 Cornell concert is preserved in the Library of Congress. In 2025, their "Gratest Hits" compilation celebrated their 60th anniversary with nine essential tracks spanning 1970 to 1987.

Their legacy stretches far beyond sales figures. Grateful Dead helped define live music as a communal experience, fostering a nomadic tribe of “Deadheads” and pioneering merch and archival releases. Their influence underpins today’s festival culture and the jam‑band scene. Even decades after Jerry Garcia’s passing and eventual disbandment, the spirit of the Dead lives on through related acts and the continuing appeal of their vast recorded archive.",45,[],[],[],[36],"https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/artist-grateful-dead.webp
"product:624844","profile",[84,94,102,110,118,126,134,142
"299742","Live/dead - Grateful Dead - Vinyl LP Record (Arrives in 20 days)","live-dead-grateful-dead-vinyl-lp-record","6599","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/7C4900-3.jpg",0.8423
similar","Similar to this record
"408990","The Allman Brothers Band – At Fillmore East (Deluxe Edition) (2 CD) - Brand New - Audio CD (Quick Ship)","the-allman-brothers-band-at-fillmore-east-deluxe-edition-2-cd-brand-new-audio-cd-quick-ship","2199","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/The-Allman-Brothers-Band-At-Fillmore-East-CD.webp",0.7756
"458240","King Crimson – In The Court Of The Crimson King (CD) - Brand New - Audio CD (Quick Ship)","king-crimson-in-the-court-of-the-crimson-king-cd-brand-new-audio-cd-quick-ship","2529","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/king-crimson-cd.jpg",0.77
"624430","Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young – Live At Fillmore East (CD) - Brand New - Audio CD (Quick Ship)","crosby-stills-nash-young-live-at-fillmore-east-cd-brand-new-audio-cd-quick-ship","3959","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/csny-live-at-fillmore-east-1969-cd-0603497839612.webp",0.7689
"409232","Led Zeppelin – Houses Of The Holy (CD) - Brand New - Audio CD (Quick Ship)","led-zeppelin-houses-of-the-holy-cd-brand-new-audio-cd-quick-ship","2969","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Led-Zeppelin-Houses-Of-The-Holy-CD.webp",0.756
"281386","The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Winterland - Brand New - Vinyl LP Record (Quick Ship)","the-jimi-hendrix-experience-winterland","5059","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/ALEG_92710__196959__02202026094629-3569-375x200-1.jpg",0.7549
"58675","Grateful Dead - Europe '72 (Live) [50th Anniversary Edition] [2CD] - Brand New - Audio CD (Quick Ship)","grateful-dead-europe-72-live-50th-anniversary-edition-2cd","3299","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/Grateful-Dead-Europe-72-Live-50th-Anniversary-Edition-2CD-375x200-2.webp",0.8328
"39227","Grateful Dead Grateful Dead (50th Anniversary Remaster) - Brand New - Vinyl LP Record (Quick Ship)","grateful-dead-grateful-dead-50th-anniversary-remaster-vinyl-record","5169","https://calcuttarecords.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/Grateful-Dead-Grateful-Dead-2017-Remaster-1-1.jpg",0.8199
