After\ncompleting his music studies in Warsaw and Berlin,\nMendelson moved to Paris in 1929, where he joined\nthe Association des Jeunes Musiciens Polonais, a\nsociety founded in 1926 to facilitate the study,\npublication, and promotion of the works of young\nPolish composers. Bacewicz also received support from\nthe Association, and from Paderewski, and studied in\nParis with Nadia Boulanger. The association’s aims\nincluded re-establishing a national musical life at the\nhighest level back in Poland (after more than a century\nof joint occupation by Russia, Prussia, and Austria), and\nboth composers returned to Warsaw and worked there\nuntil 1939. Mendelson taught at the Institute of Music,\nand Bacewicz became leader of the Polish Radio\nSymphony Orchestra and continued her career as a\ncomposer and soloist. Mendelson was imprisoned in\nthe Warsaw ghetto until 1943 when he was murdered\nby the Gestapo. Five of his works survive, thanks to the\nFrench publisher Max Eschig, including the Quartet and\nQuintet recorded here. The two works by Bacewicz on\nthis recording were rejected by the composer, and\nnever included in her catalogue of works. It is\nextremely lucky that the manuscripts have survived,\npreserved at the National Library in Warsaw.
