Currently\nprincipal horn at the BBC Symphony Orchestra,\nhe has previously served as principal horn of the\nRoyal Philharmonic Orchestra and as solo horn\nof the Berliner Philharmoniker.\nWeber’s Concertino was written for the old,\nvalveless ‘natural horn’; its limited range of\nnotes (tied to the harmonic series) was extended\nmechanically with additional tubing (‘crooks’)\nand, more artfully, by virtuoso players bending\nnotes, and varied hand stopping. The technical\ndemands of the Concertino are testament to the\nextraordinary facility of the hornists of the\nperiod.\nThe first Horn Concerto by Richard Strauss,\nwritten at the age of nineteen, whilst a student,\nis widely considered his first uncontested\nmasterpiece. Although the influence of Brahms\nand Schumann are evident, his own\ncompositional voice is unmistakable.
