Copland saw it as both nostalgic and expressive of “a society profoundly aware of its own insecurity”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>Around Quiet City, she has built an album that explores the convergence of classical music and jazz in 20th century America. It includes a new arrangement of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue and music by Leonard Bernstein, Charles Ives, Kurt Weill (who emigrated to America in the 1930s) and – maybe surprisingly – the Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. The link here is legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis: Alison Balsom plays an arrangement of the famous slow movement of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez that was made for Davis by another great jazzman, pianist Gil Evans.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp>“This album has been an utter joy to make,” says Alison Balsom. “I loved every minute of the sessions with the brilliant Britten Sinfonia, conductor Scott Stroman, oboist and cor anglais player Nicholas Daniel and my great friend and collaborator, pianist Tom Poster ...
