He has premièred hundreds of\nworks for the oboe and made many critically acclaimed\nrecordings of both new and familiar music. As a soloist he\nhas appeared with the world’s leading orchestras,\nperforming a huge range of repertoire and premièring\nworks written specially for him by many of the world’s\ngreatest composers. He is a founder member of the\nBritten Sinfonia, Haffner Wind Ensemble, Orsino\nEnsemble, and Britten Oboe Quartet. This programme\nfeatures a wide selection of chamber music by Robert\nSchumann, alongside the Three Romances by Clara\nSchumann. At the time these pieces were written, there\nwas a rapidly growing interest in amateur music making\nin the home, fuelled by a burgeoning middle class.\nBrahms, Schumann, and Mendelssohn all contributed\nsignificantly to the array of works published for this\nmarket, and it was quite normal practise for parts to be\nsubstituted for whatever instruments happened to be\navailable.
