The\nsymphonic poem Dawn (Zarya), Op. 60, dedicated to\nthe fortieth anniversary of the Revolution, seems to\nhave remained unperformed during his lifetime,\ndespite its ideologically irreproachable content. Its\npremière was finally given in the BBC studios in\nManchester, on 15 May 2019, by the BBC\nPhilharmonic under John Storgårds. When\nShostakovich died, on 9 August 1975, it had been five\nyears since Weinberg composed his last symphony.\nTo commemorate his friend and mentor (whom he\nregarded as the greatest symphonist of his age)\nWeinberg decided on a full-scale, four movement,\nnon-programmatic work as his personal tribute.\nSymphony No. 12, written between December 1975\nand February 1976 is the longest of Weinberg’s\npurely instrumental symphonies. Kirill Kondrashin\nwas due to conduct the première, but his last-minute\ninsistence on large-scale cuts and changes to the\nscore was taken by Weinberg as a great insult, and\nended their relationship. The first performance was\nfinally given as a radio broadcast on 13 October 1979,\n(probably) by the USSR TV and Radio Symphony\nOrchestra under Maxim Shostakovich.
