About David Bowie
David Bowie, born David Robert Jones in London in 1947, embarked on his musical journey in the mid-1960s, fronting mod-influenced bands before emerging as a solo artist. His breakthrough came with the 1969 sci-fi–tinged single "Space Oddity," timed with the Apollo 11 Moon mission, earning him early acclaim and establishing his flair for theatrical storytelling. He soon shed his acoustic singer-songwriter roots, embracing harder-edged sounds on albums like The Man Who Sold the World and displaying persona-driven artistry on Hunky Dory that would become his hallmark. In the early 1970s Bowie pioneered glam rock with his alter-ego Ziggy Stardust and the album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars (1972), blending theatricality, science fiction themes and raw rock energy. Always restless, he then shifted through soul-inflected R&B on Young Americans, sparking a new creative phase, and later dived into avant-garde experimentation with the Berlin Trilogy, melding krautrock, ambient and electronic textures into mainstream pop. Bowie's career was marked by relentless reinvention and eclecticism. His later works—from Heathen and Reality to the unexpected comeback with The Next Day, and the haunting, jazz-tinged finale Blackstar released just before his death—highlight a mature artist continually surprising listeners. He earned sweeping recognition: inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, awarded Grammys, Ivor Novello and multiple lifetime honors; hailed as “chameleon of rock” and credited with influencing genres from synth-pop to indie rock. David Bowie’s legacy endures not just via his music, but through bold fashion, visual art and theatricality. Exhibitions and archives worldwide celebrate his impact; he’s remembered as one of the most influential artists of the late 20th century, inspiring successive generations of musicians, designers and performers long after his passing in 2016.
