About Def Leppard
Def Leppard’s story begins as far back as 1977 in Sheffield, with schoolmates forming a group originally called Atomic Mass. In 1978 they recorded their first DIY Def Leppard EP on a shoestring budget—reportedly costing just £150, what remained was spent on fish and chips—and managed to get their single played on John Peel’s BBC Radio show, a breakthrough moment that led to a major label deal. Their debut album On Through the Night came out in 1980 and quickly marked them as rising stars in the burgeoning New Wave of British Heavy Metal. By 1981 they began working with legendary producer Robert "Mutt" Lange for their second album High ’n’ Dry, which brought them to wider American attention through MTV and rock radio. It was their third album, Pyromania (1983), however, that catapulted them to international superstardom. Fueled by anthem singles like “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages,” and powered by elaborate videos, Pyromania sold millions and became a cornerstone of 1980s pop‑metal. The band endured personal tragedies and triumphs: drummer Rick Allen lost an arm in a serious car accident, but returned to record the band's most successful album, Hysteria (1987)—a gargantuan, painstaking effort that yielded seven hit singles, including “Pour Some Sugar On Me” and “Love Bites,” and remains their best‑selling release. Guitarist Steve Clark’s death in 1991 marked another emotional blow, yet the band persevered, releasing the chart‑topping Adrenalize in 1992 and continuing with albums and extensive tours into the 21st century. Through their layered harmonies, glossy production, and arena‑ready rock, Def Leppard helped define the sound of '80s metal without sacrificing melody. Their influence spans generations of artists and their resilience—through loss, reinvention, and rock‑and‑roll excess—has cemented their place in rock history. To this day, tracks like “Pour Some Sugar On Me” remain concert centrepieces, and their records continue to delight fans old and new.
