About Giorgio Moroder
Giorgio Moroder was born Hansjörg Moroder on April 26, 1940 in Urtijëi (Urtijëi), a multilingual town in South Tyrol, northern Italy. Raised in a Ladin-, German- and Italian-speaking household, he taught himself guitar as a teenager and began performing across Europe in his late teens. By his mid‑20s he had relocated to Berlin and worked as a sound engineer, composing early hit singles before moving on to Munich’s burgeoning music scene. In the 1970s, Moroder became a trailblazer of electronic disco and synthesizer-based dance music. His collaborations with Donna Summer – especially “Love to Love You Baby” and the groundbreaking “I Feel Love” – ushered in a new, mechanized sound that helped define the disco era and laid the foundation for techno, hi‑NRG, and modern EDM. Around the same time, his own solo releases like "From Here to Eternity" (1977) and "E=MC²" (1979) showcased his mastery of synthesizer-driven, futuristic grooves. Moroder’s influence extended deep into film soundtracks. He won an Academy Award for Best Original Score for "Midnight Express" (notably the instrumental “Chase”), and later earned Oscars for Best Original Song with “Flashdance... What a Feeling” (performed by Irene Cara) and “Take My Breath Away” for Top Gun (Berlin). He also produced Blondie’s chart‑topping “Call Me” and composed for films such as Scarface, The NeverEnding Story, and American Gigolo, becoming a go‑to composer for vibrant and emotive cinematic music. In the 2010s Moroder experienced a late‑career resurgence when he contributed a spoken monologue and guidance to Daft Punk’s 2013 album Random Access Memories; the track “Giorgio by Moroder” introduced his story to a new generation. His legacy endures not only in his own recordings and awards but in how his innovations in electronic sound reshaped popular music, soundtracking decades of dance floors, films, and electronic artists.
