About Judas Priest
Judas Priest began in Birmingham in 1969 amid the city’s burgeoning rock scene. Early lineups shifted before they solidified with Rob Halford, K. K. Downing, Glenn Tipton and Ian Hill. Their first album, Rocka Rolla, emerged in 1974 amid financial struggles, but soon they began to define a sharper, heavier sound that would set the stage for a new metal era. By the late 1970s, albums such as Sin After Sin, Stained Class and Killing Machine (Hell Bent for Leather in the U.S.) showcased their evolving style—double‑kick drumming, soaring twin‑guitar harmonies, and poetic yet powerful songwriting. Their adoption of leather, studs and chains became visual shorthand for heavy metal itself, setting a lasting aesthetic. The 1980 release British Steel marked their commercial breakthrough. With stadium‑ready anthems like "Breaking the Law" and "Living After Midnight," they captured mainstream attention. Screaming for Vengeance followed in 1982 with “You’ve Got Another Thing Comin’,” cementing their reputation. In the 1990s, Halford’s departure and return in 2003 bookended a turbulent era, but the band emerged stronger with albums like Angel of Retribution, Firepower (2018) and Invincible Shield (2024), the latter becoming their highest‑charting UK record. Beyond album sales, Judas Priest’s influence resonates throughout metal—from speed and thrash to power and glam. Nicknamed the "Metal Gods," they’ve sold over 50 million records worldwide, earned Grammy recognition, and were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame via the Award for Musical Excellence. Their legacy endures in the countless bands they inspired and the metal imagery they helped define.
