About Madan Mohan
Madan Mohan was born Madan Mohan Kohli on 25 June 1924 in Baghdad, where his father served as Accountant General in the Iraqi police. The family returned to Punjab in the early 1930s, and he completed his schooling in Lahore and Dehradun before settling in Mumbai. A brief stint with All India Radio in Lucknow and Delhi offered early exposure to classical maestros, though he never undertook formal musical training. He began his film career around 1950 with Aankhen and quickly gained recognition for his command of melody, especially ghazals and emotive compositions. Over a 25-year career, Madan Mohan composed for approximately 95 released films and around 700 songs, many of which are now evergreen. His style blended Indian classical ragas with rich Western harmonies, yielding songs that were both sophisticated and deeply accessible. He had a special affinity for ghazals and plaintive melodies, and his collaborations with Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi and Talat Mahmood are among Hindi cinema’s most treasured moments. He created iconic soundtracks in films such as Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Mera Saaya (1966), Dastak (1970, winning the National Film Award for Best Music Direction), Mausam (1975), and Hanste Zakhm (1973). Memorable songs include “Lag Jaa Gale,” “Naina Barse Rim Jhim,” “Tu Jahan Jahan Chalega,” “Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho,” and “Dil Dhoondta Hai.” His final compositions, released posthumously, included numbers in Laila Majnu and Chalbaaz. His unfinished melodies were lovingly revived by his son Sanjeev Kohli in the soundtrack of Veer‑Zaara (2004), earning critical acclaim. Madan Mohan passed away on 14 July 1975 in Bombay after battling liver cirrhosis, and his funeral saw luminaries like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan as pallbearers. He is remembered as the ‘King of Melody’ and a sensitive craftsman of musical emotion. His legacy endures in the timeless resonance of ghazals and soulful tunes that continue to move listeners decades later.
