Queen

Queen came together in London in 1970 with Freddie Mercury on vocals and piano, Brian May on guitar, and Roger Taylor on drums; they were soon completed by John Deacon on bass. In their early days they built a reputation playing progressive rock and heavy hard rock, with rich vocal harmonies and Mercury’s theatrical presence. Mercury’s flamboyant energy, May’s layered guitar sound, Taylor’s vocal and rhythmic drive, and Deacon’s melodic bass forged their unmistakable identity. By the mid-1970s, Queen had begun exploring more diverse and radio-friendly territory. Their third album, "Sheer Heart Attack", saw them mixing metal, ragtime, Caribbean rhythms and British music-hall stylings. This creative adventurousness burst into mainstream acclaim with "A Night at the Opera" (1975), anchored by the operatic-rock epic "Bohemian Rhapsody", still one of the most celebrated records in popular music. Throughout the late ’70s and ’80s, Queen produced stadium anthems like "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions"—songs designed for audience participation on a global scale. Collaborations such as “Under Pressure” with David Bowie, and genre experiments like the funk-inflected "Another One Bites the Dust" expanded their reach. Their 1981 Greatest Hits compilation became the best-selling album in UK history, with Queen selling an estimated 250–300 million records globally. Queen’s legacy extends far beyond sales. They’ve been honored with inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame (with each member recognized), and received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Polar Music Prize. Best remembered for their theatricality, multi-genre musicianship, and stadium-shaking anthems, Queen remain woven into the fabric of rock music, beloved by generations across the world.
