About Ray Charles

Born in Albany, Georgia, in 1930, Ray Charles lost his sight by age seven and nurtured his musical gifts at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. He left school at 15 following his mother's passing, embarking on a journey that would see him fuse gospel’s fervor, jazz’s nuance, and blues’s grit into a style all his own. In the 1950s, Charles emerged as a formidable force in R&B with hits such as “Mess Around,” “I’ve Got a Woman,” and “What’d I Say,” the latter becoming his first million‑seller and a cornerstone of early soul. His rich, raspy voice and rhythmic piano playing became instantly recognizable, earning him both commercial success and critical acclaim. The early 1960s brought even broader horizons. With recordings like “Georgia on My Mind” and “Hit the Road, Jack,” Charles crossed into the pop mainstream. His 1962 album Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music, featuring the plaintive “I Can’t Stop Loving You,” broke barriers by blending country with soul and selling over a million copies. Charles’s achievements extended well beyond records. He won 13 Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, received Kennedy Center and National Medal of Arts honors, and his music—including “What’d I Say”—was preserved in the U.S. Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry. His enduring influence can be heard in generations of performers who followed his fearless blending of genres and emotional directness. Even after his death in 2004, Ray Charles’s legacy continues to shine. His posthumous duets collection Genius Loves Company swept the Grammy Awards, and his reinterpretations—whether of country, gospel, or pop standards—remain celebrated for their depth and soul. He stands as a true American musical genius whose work still resonates with listeners today.
