About Rodgers & Hammerstein

It’s hard to recount the story of 20th-century musical theatre without turning the spotlight on Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. Rodgers, born in 1902, had already made his mark through his previous partnership with Lorenz Hart. But when he joined forces with Hammerstein, born in 1895, the pair sparked an era of innovation. From their first Broadway collaboration in 1943 to their last in 1959, they composed musicals that combined narrative depth with emotional clarity, and won accolades ranging from Pulitzer Prizes to Tonys, Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys. Their early collaborations yielded groundbreaking works: Oklahoma! in 1943 transformed how musical storytelling and character development worked, backed by unforgettable songs like “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’.” Carousel followed in 1945 with a poetic, emotionally wrought narrative and music that captured both joy and heartbreak. They then tackled complex themes of prejudice in South Pacific (1949), which earned them a second Pulitzer Prize, and exotic romance and cultural encounter in The King and I (1951). They also embraced popular appeal with The Sound of Music (1959), a sentimental yet stirring tale set against the rise of Nazism, featuring enduring songs such as “Edelweiss” and “My Favorite Things.” In between, they ventured into lesser-known projects—Cinderella for television in 1957, the ambitious albeit flawed Allegro in 1947, and experimental works like Pipe Dream and Me and Juliet—each reflecting their willingness to explore different narrative forms, even if some found limited commercial or critical success. Their legacy extends far beyond Broadway: they reshaped American musical theatre, integrating music and story in a seamless fashion and addressing social issues with grace and sincerity. Community and school theatres around the world continue to revive their works, and their influence echoes through generations of composers and lyricists who regard Rodgers & Hammerstein as the gold standard of the genre. Their catalogue endures not only for its musical richness, but for its emotional honesty and cultural resonance.
