About Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas, Texas in 1954 and grew up immersed in blues, inspired by his older brother Jimmie and artists like B.B. King, Albert King and Jimi Hendrix. He began performing in local bands in his teens, eventually moving to Austin in the early 1970s and cutting his teeth playing in groups like Blackbird, the Cobras and his own Triple Threat Revue before forming Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble in 1978. The band’s breakthrough came after their fiery performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1982, which caught the ears of David Bowie and Epic Records. Their debut album, "Texas Flood" (1983), introduced Vaughan’s signature over‑driven Stratocaster tone and tracks like "Pride and Joy" and "Rude Mood." It was followed by strong follow‑ups such as "Couldn’t Stand the Weather" (1984) and "Soul to Soul" (1985), cementing his place as a beacon of contemporary blues. Though Vaughan struggled with addiction through much of the mid‑1980s, he found sobriety and creative renewal by the time of his final studio album released in his lifetime, "In Step" (1989). That LP included his only number‑one hit, “Crossfire,” and won a Grammy. His posthumous releases—most notably "The Sky Is Crying" and the collaboration "Family Style" with brother Jimmie—continued to showcase his musical depth. Tragically, Vaughan’s life was cut short in 1990 in a helicopter crash following a concert in Wisconsin. His death, at just 35, stunned the music world. Yet his legacy endures: he’s repeatedly ranked among the greatest guitarists ever, has inspired countless blues and rock artists, and in Austin a memorial now honours his impact. His recordings remain beloved by fans and collectibility continues—especially among vinyl, CD and cassette enthusiasts.
