About Suchitra Mitra

Born on September 19, 1924, into a culturally rich family—her father was a noted littérateur and friend of the Tagore family—Suchitra Mitra’s early life was steeped in Bengali literature and music. She joined Sangit Bhavana at Visva-Bharati in 1941, receiving her first formal training in Rabindra Sangeet just twenty days after Tagore’s passing. Soon after, she returned to Calcutta and recorded her first Rabindra Sangeet album in 1945, marking the start of a long and luminous career. Mitra’s musical style was defined by intelligence, nuance, and emotional depth. She believed that singing Tagore meant understanding the lyrics, not merely reproducing the melody. A purist in approach, she led the Rabindra Sangeet department at Rabindra Bharati University until 1984 and co-founded Rabitirtha, a school that nurtured generations of Tagore song enthusiasts. Over decades, she recorded hundreds of Rabindra Sangeet renditions, and her powerful performances of songs like “Shonar Bangla Ami Tomai Bhalobashi” inspired Bangladesh’s liberation movement. A recipient of prestigious honours—including the Padma Shri (1974), Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1986), Desikottama from Visva-Bharati and multiple honorary doctorates—she also served as the first woman Sheriff of Kolkata in 2001, cementing both her cultural and civic legacy. Suchitra Mitra’s influence continues to resonate. Her voice and interpretations remain benchmarks for purity and feeling in Tagore’s music. Institutions like Prangan and Purabi honor her memory through festivals, while students and admirers still gather to celebrate her artistry. Her life was an eloquent testament to the power of song and scholarship in preserving a treasured musical heritage.
