Vilayat Khan

Born in Gouripur (now in Bangladesh) in 1928 into the celebrated Imdadkhani (Etawah) gharana, Vilayat Khan inherited a musical lineage stretching back to the Mughal era. His father, Enayat Khan, and grandfather, Imdad Khan, were distinguished sitar and surbahar players. Though he recorded at age eight, his father’s untimely death when Vilayat was ten led his musical training to be shaped by his mother Bashiran Begum, his uncles Wahid Khan and Zinde/Vande Hassan Khan. As a child, he wished to be a singer, but family tradition steered him toward mastery of the sitar. Vilayat emerged as both purist and innovator. He revolutionized sitar playing through gayaki ang, making the instrument sing with emotive, vocal-like phrasing and bending notes after plucking. His improvisations, reinterpreted ragas, and self-designed instrument modifications—eschewing tanpura and using chikari strings for drone—made his performances mesmerizing and uniquely expressive. His career was extraordinary: first professional recordings and performances in childhood, major international tours across Europe, the Soviet Union, Africa, and the USA, and high-profile film compositions for Satyajit Ray’s Jalsaghar, Merchant‑Ivory’s The Guru, and Kadambari. He won a silver medal at the Moscow Film Festival in 1959 for Jalsaghar’s score and continued recording into the 1990s with India Archive Music. Despite offers of prestigious civilian awards—Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan—he famously refused them, accepting only titles like Aftab‑e‑Sitar and Bharat Sitar Samrat. Vilayat Khan passed away in Mumbai in March 2004 after a seven‑decade career. His legacy lives on through his children—sitarists Shujaat and Hidayat Khan and singer Zila Khan—and disciples across the world. He remains celebrated as a sitarist who transformed his instrument to resemble the human voice and expanded its expressive horizons.
