Reggae emerged from Jamaica in the late 1960s, evolving from ska and rocksteady into a genre defined by its syncopated offbeat rhythms, bass-heavy sound, and lyrics rooted in Rastafarianism, social consciousness, and resistance. Bob Marley's global breakthrough made reggae the first music from the Caribbean to achieve worldwide penetration, but the genre's roots run far deeper — into Studio One, Trojan Records, and the Kingston dancehalls of the 1960s.

Reggae's influence on global music culture is enormous — it directly seeded dub, dancehall, and was absorbed into hip-hop, punk, and electronic music. The bass weight of a reggae record played on a proper system remains one of the most physical listening experiences in music.
