A BAD DONATO stands as a thrilling detour in João Donato's storied career, blending his Brazilian jazz roots with an audacious dose of electric funk. Released in 1970, this album captures Donato at his most adventurous, swapping out the gentler bossa nova of his earlier work for a soundscape that is daring, playful, and utterly infectious. The result is a forward-thinking fusion, driven by swirling keyboards, tight horn sections, and rhythms that ripple with both groove and invention.
What sets A BAD DONATO apart is its fearless sense of experimentation. Donato, alongside a cadre of top-tier Brazilian musicians, crafts tracks that swerve between hypnotic jazz improvisation and punchy funk vamps, all while retaining an unmistakable tropical flair. It’s an album that feels both time-stamped and timeless, a cult classic revered by crate-diggers and sampled by contemporary producers alike.
Owning this record means holding a piece of Brazilian musical history—a rare moment when tradition and innovation collided in a joyous, boundary-pushing celebration. Whether you’re a jazz explorer or simply chasing new sonic thrills, A BAD DONATO rewards attentive ears and open minds.
