Alone on the Street Franches Dhont (voice) Lukas Huisman (piano) This album explores the cultural interaction between Japan and the West through a combination of rarely performed Japanese song cycles and piano works commissioned and composed for this project. The songs illustrate how K saku Yamada, Kei Kusagawa and Kiyoshi Komatsu integrate Western influences — German late Romanticism, Claude Debussy’s impressionism and the idiom of composers such as Benjamin Britten, respectively — into an aesthetic framework rooted in Japanese art. Jeroen De Brauwer’s contemporary piano works function as a contemporary Western reflection on the genre, recontextualising elements of jazz. A triptych with its own narrative and emotional development, it offers a contrasting view; its three pieces function as hushed intermezzi between the three song collections.
