BWV 205 «Zerreißet, zersprenget, zertrümmert die Gruft»: BWV 205 «Zerreißet, zersprenget, zertrümmert die Gruft» features an unusually rich instrumentation: choir with four vocal soloists and soloists and an orchestra with a large woodwind, brass and percussion section. What for? To celebrate the name day of a Leipzig university professor of logic and philosophy. Bach and his librettist Picander pulled out all the stops. The baroque-style short opera is pompous, dramatic and funny, offering the audience cheerful musical enjoyment and light-hearted entertainment. • BWV 196 'Der Herr denket an uns': The wedding cantata BWV 196 'Der Herr denket an uns' was composed by Bach when he was still young. This can be seen in the older form, which dispenses with connecting recitatives and a final chorale. In BWV 196, Bach set only verses 12–15 of Psalm 115 to music. The form and text give the cantata a remarkably slender structure. However, the piece does not feel short, as Bach endowed it with a generous amount of freshness and luminosity. It is quite conceivable that the young Bach wrote the cantata as wedding music for himself or a close friend. • BWV 19 ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’: The opening chorus of BWV 19 ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’ is a ‘Dies Irae’ in major. In an apotheotic whirlwind without equal, good triumphs over evil. But we are not quite there yet, as the rest of the cantata shows. For angels must stand by our side so that 'Leib und Seele zugedecket' (body and soul covered) remain. The counterpart to the opening chorus is the indescribably beautiful tenor aria No. 5, 'Bleibt, ihr Engel, bleibt bei mir!', in which Bach weaves in the death chorale 'Ach Herr, lass dein lieb Engelein' (known as the final chorale of the St John Passion) and has it played by a delicate trumpet. A musical and theological event in itself!
