Backlash - Hubbard, Freddie - LP - Brand New Vinyl (Arrives in 20days)

Freddie Hubbard’s 1967 release 'Backlash' is a radiant showcase of his creative restlessness and fiery trumpet virtuosity. Recorded at a pivotal moment in jazz, the album bridges the hard bop of the early 1960s and the emerging soul-jazz movement, with Hubbard leading a stellar sextet including James Spaulding on alto sax and flute, and Ray Barretto’s congas adding a vibrant rhythmic edge. ‘Backlash’ doesn’t just ride the groove—it commands it, especially on the title track and the relentless ‘Return of the Prodigal Son.’ Each cut crackles with urgency, yet leaves space for deep, melodic exploration. Hubbard’s tone is dazzling—bright but never harsh, agile yet grounded in bluesy lyricism. What sets this album apart is its sense of forward momentum; every solo feels like a new frontier. For collectors and listeners seeking more than nostalgia, ‘Backlash’ offers a window into an era of jazz where boundaries blurred and innovation was the order of the day. This pressing will satisfy both the audiophile and the adventurous ear, making it a vital addition to any serious jazz collection.
