“I have always been a passionate advocate of 20th century music, but happily that has not prevented me from satisfying my appetite for the repertoire of the Classical and Romantic eras.” The French pianist Michel Béroff, who turns 75 in May, produced his wide-ranging Erato discography in the years between 1968 and 1994. He is often associated with the music of Olivier Messiaen: at the age of just eleven he performed excerpts from the epic Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant-Jésus in front of the composer himself!

Messiaen is, of course, among the composers to feature on the 42 CDs in this set. It also includes: solo works and works for piano and orchestra by Bach, Bartók, Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Milhaud, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, Ravel, Scriabin, Schubert, Schumann and Weber, and collaborations with other distinguished musicians – fellow pianist Jean-Philippe Collard in music by Debussy, Dukas, Bizet and Ravel; violinist Augustin Dumay in Brahms, Franck, Szymanowski and Strauss, and soprano Barbara Hendricks in songs by Debussy. In addition there are three previously unreleased items: Bach’s Overture in the French Style (from 1969) and Beethoven’s Piano Sonatas Nos 30 & 31 (from 1978).
