Sir Roger Norrington, born in 1934, has been called “arguably the most important British conductor of the last half century … a man who has emphatically changed classical music for the better” (The Guardian). His vital interpretations of Beethoven's complete symphonies with the London Classical Players – the orchestra he formed in 1978 – both challenged and altered perceptions when they were released in the late 1980s. Norrington’s aim was “to recapture something of the exhilaration and disturbance Beethoven’s music generated in his day.” He went on to conduct recordings that ranged from Purcell, Handel and Mozart to Berlioz, Wagner, Brahms and Bruckner, encompassing orchestral works, choral repertoire and opera.

This 45-CD collection – recorded with London Classical Players, the Orchestra of St Luke's and Camerata Salzburg – also features such artists as instrumentalists Daniel Hope and Melvyn Tan, and singers Marilyn Horne, Lorraine Hunt, Frederica von Stade, Dawn Upshaw, Olaf Bär, David Daniels, Thomas Hampson, Samuel Ramey and Anthony Rolfe-Johnson.
