Saint-Saens: Complete Symphonies is an album by Cristian / Olivier Latry Macelaru, released in 2021. Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, the ‘Organ’ Symphony, is one of his grandest and most emblematic works. Far more rarely heard are his other four symphonies – No. 1, No. 2, and two unnumbered works, the early Symphony in A major and the Symphony in F major, ‘Urbs Roma’. To mark the centenary of the composer’s death in December 1921, the Orchestre National de France, conducted by its music director Cristian Măcelaru, has now recorded all five symphonies, with Olivier Latry as organist in No. 3.

Cristian Măcelaru became Music Director of the Orchestre National de France in September 2020. “The French quality of the Orchestre National’s sound lies in its flexibility and elegance,” he says. “Its colour comes from the way richness is combined with a sweetness and brilliance, and also a transparency …There is never any sense of thickness in its sound – rather like a dancer who takes to the air with ease and lands lightly on his feet.”

The symphonies span some 35 years of Saint-Saëns’ dazzling career – from around 1850, when he was 15, to 1886, the year the Symphony No. 3 was premiered. “The French orchestral repertoire must be conducted with the same commitment one would bring to Beethoven,” continues Măcelaru. “Saint-Saëns is an incredible composer. Take the opening of the finale of his Symphony No. 1 – the ceremonious rhythms are like something by Lully! This symphony is the work of a young musician of 17 years old, and it recalls Mendelssohn and Schumann, but the harmony could not be anyone else’s.”
