Celebrating his 70th birthday on December 16th is the Cuban-born guitarist Manuel Barrueco. The New York Times has praised him as “one of the best guitarists of the 1970s generation”. On the opposite coast the Los Angeles Times declared him “A major artist with remarkable musicianship and a world of technique ... simply and consistently awesome”.

This 11-CD box contains Barrueco’s complete Warner Classics discography. It offers works written for guitar by such composers as Barrios Mangoré, Brouwer, Orbón, Ponce, Sor and Turina, transcriptions of music by Albéniz, Bach, De Visée, Falla, Granados and Mozart, and arrangements of some of Lennon & McCartney’s greatest hits. Among Barrueco’s colleagues in the collection are soprano Barbara Hendricks, flautist Emmanuel Pahud, and Plácido Domingo, who both conducts Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and sings four of the composer’s songs – to a guitar accompaniment, of course.
