Exploring “the duality of the female soul – in which sensitivity unites with power,” soprano Emőke Baráth performs arias from nine operas by Handel. Accompanied by Philippe Jaroussky, here conducting the instrumentalists of Artaserse, she enters the minds of both female and male characters from Alcina, Giulio Cesare, Partenope, Radamisto, Faramondo, Deidamia, Amadigi di Gaula, Lotario and Arianna in Creta.

Dualità also offers insight into the women who became opera stars in the 18th century. “For a 21st-century audience, seeing a woman in a travesty role is no longer sensational,” says Emőke Baráth. “Thanks to this duality of the female soul, everyday heroines succeeded in a world where the odds were stacked against them, and on the theatrical stage.”

For Erato, Baráth and Jaroussky have previously collaborated on recordings of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice and a programme of Monteverdi, Sartorio and Rossi. Voglio cantar, Baráth’s solo album built around the music of Venetian composer Barbara Strozzi, attracted unequivocal praise from Opera magazine: “Not only is the voice intrinsically lovely, but Baráth brings a range of colour and nuance that shows a grasp of both textual and musical syntax … By any standards this is exceptionally compelling singing.”
