After the unexpected death of her father, singer Liza van POM expected to write a raw and dark album of mourning. Instead, she created Enlightened, Baby: a colorful pop record full of glitter, pink, and catchy melodies. By focusing her attention outward while writing, she found solace in a period of panic, grief, and confusion. Enlightened, Baby looks back and mocks the idea that we can be prepared for the deepest valleys life throws at us. Each of the album's songs tells a story about "enlightenment" in its own way. Singer Liza focuses on the people around her—from a breakup to a lonely divorce and a cult leader with delusions of grandeur—where unexpected moments of insight emerge. Driven by the fear of becoming cynical, honest and sincere songs emerged, like "I WANT IT!", an ode to love in all its forms. With the voices of friends in the choirs, the album feels more than ever like a collaborative work: a record that shows that grief may never go away, but it does become more bearable when you share it together.
