Stephen Hough, widely considered the leading British pianist of his generation, celebrates his 60th birthday on November 22nd. “When I play a concert, in a sense I am the composer,” he has said, “I’m bringing their message. I have to speak the music from deep inside and with utter conviction … so the best scenario is to engage with works which give life to you and so you give life to them.”

This 9-CD set gathers recordings Hough made over more than a decade in his earlier career. It contains works by Mozart, Schumann, Liszt, Brahms (both concertos with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Andrew Davis) and Britten, and two delightful albums of short, often virtuosic ‘encore pieces’. "The encore is possibly the most personal part of the evening,” says Hough. “A bit of fun after the main, serious business. I've said this many times, but it's every bit as difficult to make the perfect soufflé as it is to make a main course!"
