Extending the Range is the result of a musical collaboration between two of Sweden’s most celebrated ensembles in their respective fields: the choir Allmänna Sången and the Malva Quartet. Rooted in their respective traditions yet united by a shared commitment to new music, the two ensembles bring together mixed choir and string quartet — a rare yet compelling combination in contemporary repertoire. The album features several new works for choir and string quartet, which appear here on record for the first time in their present form. The music is composed by some of the most acclaimed Swedish and American composers of our time, including Britta Byström, Anna-Karin Klockar, Julia Wolfe, Karin Rehnqvist, Jessie Montgomery, Erika Hammarberg, Andrea Tarrodi, and Libby Larsen. Spanning a broad range of musical styles and expressions, the album showcases the wealth of musical possibilities contained within the combined setting of mixed choir and string quartet. In addition to the works for choir and string quartet, the album also includes two a cappella choral pieces and one work for string quartet alone.
