It’s a record that listens closely to the environment, and then reshapes it into something personal and unusually alive.

At the core of Floot Bird is the haunting voice of the superb lyrebird, recorded in the forests where Fitzgerald grew up. Known for its mimicry and harmonically rich calls, the bird became the unlikely anchor for the album’s rhythmic identity. By slowing down these field recordings, (captured by his father, an avid natural sound archivist), Fitzgerald uncovered hidden polyrhythms and claves that became the structural basis of multiple pieces. The title nods to this phenomenon: the uncanny way these calls echo the phrasing of a flutist practicing alone in the wild. The natural world threads through the album in striking ways. One piece draws from a recording made one year after the devastating 2019 Australian bushfires, taken at the precise point where three major fires converged. The landscape was almost silent, save for a single bird calling into the charred forest. Fitzgerald built the track around this fragile sound, weaving bowed mandolin, electronics and intimate textures into a portrait of loss and slow renewal.

Other moments arise from everyday environments: a supermarket freezer humming a perfect chord, a banjolele tapped into an iPhone becoming rhythmic material. Nothing is too accidental to matter; nothing is too mundane to be musical. Floot Bird treats the world as a collaborator. Fitzgerald composes from rhythm outward. Bass grooves become the foundation for compositions that are later shaped, stretched and reframed through detailed production work. The album’s sonic direction was crafted alongside producer Petter Eldh, whose hardware-driven and deeply tactile aesthetic sharpens the edges of the record without smoothing away its human presence.

As Floot Bird closes, the album offers a quiet suggestion rather than a statement: that in an era of constant technological acceleration, there is still something compelling, even necessary, in work that carries the fingerprints of the world that shaped it. Fitzgerald’s Floot Bird doesn’t argue for or against anything. It simply exists in the space where nature, memory and human touch meet, and lets the listener decide what to make of it.
