A saxophone quartet is, on paper, a limitation. Four horns. No rhythm section. No singer standing in front to guide the audience through the story. For many ensembles, that limitation becomes an intellectual exercise: complex arrangements, technical precision, music that asks to be admired from a distance. Artvark chose a different route entirely.

Across two decades, the Dutch quartet has treated the saxophone quartet not as a chamber format, but as a living organism far beyond the boundaries of jazz. Along the way, the group moved further away from traditional jazz quartet roles and closer toward something more fluid: modern expressive (art) music they call it, rooted equally in jazz, minimalism, cinematic composition, sound design and contemporary classical music.
