Bach maintains a strong presence in David Fray’s Erato discography, now expanded with a landmark of the solo keyboard repertoire: the Goldberg Variations.

“The Goldberg Variations are a real test,” says Fray. “They are the work of a lifetime, perhaps a work about life itself … a kind of rite of passage, a journey. Every element of human life is in them … When you return to the theme after the 30 variations, as you look back over everything that has happened in the last hour-and-a-half, it’s as if you're at the end of your life. Few works give such a sense of eternity.” Fray’s playing of Bach has been praised by BBC Music Magazine as “exactly nuanced, its technical control aristocratically poised, producing sonorities of irresistibly pellucid light and shade.”

The French pianist made this recording in the Chapelle de Piétat in Barbazan-Debat, a small town in the Pyrenees in south-western France. “I had the idea of recording this album in the place where I grew up,” he explains. “I've always loved this little chapel, and these spaces have a unique way of bringing the sound to life … You shouldn't aim for perfection but for authenticity: to produce something that is natural, coherent and tells a story that everyone can relate to, because it's the story of humanity.”
