Two to become one: Frenchman Guillaume Latil and Brazilian Matheus Donato have brought together the cello of one and the cavaquinho of the other. That’s the meaning behind the title of their joint album, Hémisphères, whose beauty springs from the interweaving of strings. The duo was born on neutral ground—neither truly jazz nor truly choro—where improvisation meets contemporary music, tinged with the colors of chamber music. But it takes talent and dedication to harmonize the cello, haloed with the prestige of Beethoven and Dvo ák, with the bright tones of the cavaquinho, the small guitar through which the Brazilian people express their emotions and struggles. Playing with this contrast, Guillaume Latil and Matheus Donato don’t fuse into one voice, but rather complement each other—alternating original compositions with reinterpretations of works by Schumann, Pixinguinha, and Argentine pianist Carlos Aguirre. While veiling their virtuosity in a contemplative atmosphere, they achieve a true feat: creating, through two instruments from distant origins, a music that flows effortlessly—as if it had always existed.
