As its name suggests, Hollywood – the brainchild of multi-faceted pianist Sebastian Knauer – is a celebration of music for the silver screen. It is also celebration of the ‘first family’ of American film music. As Knauer explains: “My encounter with the great American film composer and conductor David Newman led me to dedicate an entire album to American film music from its beginnings to the present day.”

The composer of almost 100 film scores, David Newman made the orchestral arrangements for 10 of Hollywood ’s 15 tracks and also conducts the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. David is the son of Alfred Newman (1900-1970), a towering figure in 20th century film music: he conducted and scored more than 300 films, won nine Oscars and composed the triumphant fanfare for 20th Century Fox. He leads the list of luminaries whose music appears on the album. New pieces have been contributed by David, his younger brother Thomas, and Conrad Pope – another leading figure in film music. The illustrious list of composers on the album is completed by Aaron Copland, Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Morton Gould, James Horner and Alex North, and among the movies represented are The Greatest Story Ever Told, Spartacus, Basic Instinct, A Beautiful Mind, How The West Was Won, To Kill A Mockingbird and Our Town.
