Leo Samama (*1951) studied musicology at Utrecht University, as well as composition and orchestral conducting. Until 1991, he taught at the Utrecht Conservatory, the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and Utrecht University, and after 2010 at conservatories in Maastricht and Tilburg. He was also affiliated with the Volkskrant, the Haagse Post and NRC Handelsblad newspapers, and wrote for Mens en Melodie, Luister and numerous other magazines. Between 1988 and 1994, Leo Samama served as artistic advisor to the board of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam and was deputy head of the orchestra’s artistic department from 1991 to 1993. He also served for some time as artistic advisor to the Centre for Dutch Music and for the NCRV concert series. From 1994 to 2003, he was head of the artistic department of the Residentie Orkest Den Haag, and then until 2010 general manager of the Netherlands Chamber Choir. He is co-founder of the Netherlands String Quartet Academy (NSKA) and of the European network for professional chamber choirs TENSO. As a musicologist, he has written books on a variety of subjects. His study of Dutch music in the 20th century (1986, 2006) is a standard. In addition, De zin van muziek (2014, 2016, in English: The Meaning of Music, 2016), Het strijkkwartet (2018) and Alphons Diepenbrock, een vocaal componist (2012, English version: 2023) have been very successful too. In the Netherlands, some 120 hours of university lectures have been recorded and released on CD and streaming audio by Home Academy. As a composer, Samama has written more than a hundred works, which have been performed all over the world and recorded on radio and CD. In 2010 Leo Samama was knighted as an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau for his contribution to Dutch musical life.
