Continuing our multi-award-winning Berlioz cycle (Les Troyens, Damnation de Faust) with conductor John Nelson and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg. Berlioz’s orchestral song cycle on a libretto by Théophile Gautier, Les Nuits d’Été, sung by our superstar (bari)tenor Michael Spyres. This is an exceptional recording: First ever recording of the original 1856 version by one single voice- Michael Spyres sings with a bass, tenor and bariton voice.

John Nelson, masterly in the music of Berlioz, conducts the Orchestre philharmonique de Strasbourg in two works inspired by Romantic poetry: the sumptuous song cycle Les Nuits d’été and the symphony with solo viola Harold en Italie.

The musical hero of Lord Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage is the young British viola player Timothy Ridout. France’s most authoritative newspaper, Le Monde, judges that he has already “carved out a place for himself in the very closed circle of great violists”. The other soloist is the tenor Michael Spyres, prominent in three other major Berlioz recordings that John Nelson has conducted for Erato: Les Troyens, La Damnation de Faust and the mighty Requiem. Nelson sees him as “the most glorious lyric tenor who’s done a lot of Berlioz in his life,“ while Gramophone has written of his “uniquely versatile voice … perfectly equalised over more than two-and-a-half octaves”. Berlioz imagined that the six orchestral songs in Les Nuits d’été would be shared between three different singers, a tenor, a baritone and a contralto. Traditionally, transpositions have been made when a single singer interprets the entire cycle. With his extraordinary vocal and expressive range, Spyres has become the first singer to record all six of the songs in Les Nuits d’été in the keys used by Berlioz in his orchestral score of 1856.
