Post-punk is often described with words like “taut” and “coiled.” But the vibe of Shopping isn’t tightly wound, and Rachel Aggs’ guitar playing isn’t angular; instead, the UK trio’s third album, The Official Body, is wide, unspooled, and elastic. On the highlight “Suddenly Gone,” Aggs pulls on the upper frets of her guitar like Dick Dale trying to play through an earthquake, over spinal bass and tidal drums. On every track, the group is in loud, crazy, specific conversation with each other over vast distances; they create so much space to move in. The Official Body has such an expansive and warm soul that it forces you reconsider all the wiry clichés associated with post-punk. –Jeremy D. Larson
