Presenting the first complete recording on period instruments of Louise Farrenc’s symphonies and overtures, conductor Laurence Equilbey says: “Farrenc has a fine command of musical forms and cultivates the art of musical discourse effectively and with finesse. An heir to Beethoven through her teachers Reicha and Hummel, she defined a very interesting place for herself in the symphonic repertoire, between the French and German spheres of influence.”

Louise Farrenc was a prominent and pioneering figure in 19th century Paris. In 1842 she made history by becoming a professor at the Paris Conservatoire. She was, of course, unusual as a female composer who achieved significant recognition, but she was also unusual as a symphonist: at the time, the success of French composers was judged by their achievements in opera.

“It would be hard to imagine better performances, a better-sounding recording, or better advocacy for Farrenc,” wrote Fanfare in response to a previous release from Equilbey and the Insula orchestra. In a similar vein, Gramophone enthused that: “In their lucidity, colour and feeling for the music’s architecture, with climaxes unerringly prepared and clinched, these performances would be hard to better.”
