Gabriel Fauré, a pivotal figure in the evolution of French music, died one hundred years ago on November 4th. A composer of captivating refinement, he became an influential figure in the French musical establishment and a bridge between the Romantic and modern eras: once the student of Saint-Saëns, he went on to teach such figures as Maurice Ravel and Nadia Boulanger. This LP, Pavane: Best of Fauré includes the elegantly sinuous Pavane of the title, the cello transcription of the reflective song ‘Après un rêve’, the haunting Sicilienne from the music for Maurice Maeterlinck’s play Pelléas et Mélisande, the delicate Berceuse from the Dolly Suite for piano duet, and several movements from the consoling, transcendent Requiem.
