This recording of Brahms’ epic Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor was made in London in 1960. It has been described by Sir András Schiff, one of today’s leading pianists, as “a shocking, overwhelming experience”. Now once again released on vinyl, remastered from the original tapes by Art & Son Studio, Annecy, it brings together mighty Chilean pianist Claudio Arrau and conductor Carlo Maria Giulini, a towering musical figure of the latter 20th century.

Claudio Arrau (1903-1991) was an aristocrat of the piano. “Sometimes when I play, I get a sudden flash of new insight into the music,” he said. “It's a strange and mystical feeling. I think some of the greatest interpretive miracles have happened in this manner … I try to play the way a cat jumps ... Now when I play I am almost in ecstasy, a creative ecstasy, which I wouldn't miss for anything. This is what I live for."
